What is noise? The “noise” they refer to is you, their network of followers. Examples include tweets about pets, children, going to the gym, what someone ate for lunch, etc.
Over the years I have learned, great ideas, long lasting friendships and partnerships, often come from amazing places. Looking at the surface is not a good judge of a person or situation. Everyone has something to offer, everyone is necessary, everyone is of value.
This video remains one of my favorite Social Networking tips, one I thought I would share with you today. The video is by Gary Vaynerchuk, a man with over 16,000 twitter followers, who discusses “How to cut through the noise”.
He presents his view on managing the “noise”, whether on Facebook, Pownce, Twitter, Email or whatever other platform you use on to connect to your network of people.
Small things, connect people, people represent your networks. When my dog had cancer, there were many supportive dog lovers on Twitter, which quickly turned into friends. Not surprising, several have become great business resources, exchanging help, tips and even leads to prospective business. Twitter people who bonded over the love for our pets. What is noise to some are common bonds to others.
First, how do you like the video? So what do you view as noise? Do you find it difficult to manage all the Twitter traffic? Have your found a way to manage your Twitter messages?

I’ve been thinking lately about how rapidly information spreads within Social Networks, through this second generation of Word-of-Mouth Marketing.
Word-of-Mouth Marketing has always been considered one of the most powerful and effective Marking tools available, and it doesn’t cost a dime.
In the past, Word-of-Mouth Marketing could only spread as fast as an Influence and Authority Network’s reach. But today, Social Networking through mediums like You Tube, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Second Life has made it super viral.
Viral marketing uses pre-existing social networks to produce increases in brand awareness through self-replicating viral processes that can spread world-wide very quickly. Marketing delivered or enhanced by the network effects of the Internet… Viral marketing is a marketing phenomenon that facilitates and encourages people to pass along a marketing message voluntarily.
So, ultimately, do you think Viral marketing is based on natural human behavior?
The way I understand it, is that statically, a satisfied customer tells an average of three people about a product or service they like, and will tell an average of eleven people about a product or service which they did not like.
So, the goal would be to identify individuals with high Social Networking Potential and create Viral Messages that appeal to this segment of the population and have a high probability of being passed along.
As I see it, today, Social Networking is in the infancy stage, but what will happen in the next two to five years, will make traditional forms of advertising obsolete, and force Corporate Marketing to embrace the Social Network Marketing Media potential.
People like us, who are early adapters, and embrace this new Word-of-Mouth 2.0 medium, will be in advantageous position to capture market share and reap the rewards of brand awareness.
Do you see traditional advertising mediums changing due to this new Social Networking phenomenon?

Our research currently is focuses on Second Life, by Linden Labs, yet we continue to explore other platforms.
In my exploration, I came upon The Library of Second Life Library Foundation. A collection of rare volumes and fine manuscripts. A treasure and a great example of how these evolving 3D environments, can enhance the educational experience, of various ages.
As I arrived at the destination, I was amazed at the ornate detail of the building and fine attention to detail. As I walked up the steps, I wondered if the inside would be as grand and I was not disappointed.
The library is an amazing creation of grandeur. The beautiful staircases, the tapestry rugs, fine wood, the ornate detail on the wall covering and the grand staircase. I could hardly wait to explore.
The first floor
I went to the left and found the first floor library. It was full of books written by various authors. The Story of Miss Moppet, written by Beatrix Potter, was the first book opened. Upon touching the pages, they began to turn, and I saw the incredible illustrations, reproduced. There was also a drop down menu, to give the reader more control.
I soon turned to admire another book containing paintings by Cassius Marcellus Coolidge. Paintings of dogs playing poker, pool and more. The reproduction of the illustrations are outstanding.
Then I found, Feline Fancies & Mouse Pie, The Cats of Luis Lain and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll, 1865. Each book was a creation in itself. I felt as if I was in a real world library.
As I walked out of this first library, there was a cozy fireplace and seating area for visitors. On the table is a audio book, Around the World in 80 Days, by Jules Verne. It was available for listening while in the library.
On the opposite side of this building, is a set of double doors, inside is a library of audio books. All available for use within the library. A few were on sale for 10-25 linden dollars, for use after leaving the library. *
Second Floor
After I explored the audio book selection, I walked up the grand staircase, to the second floor. This library was full of books written by English Poet and Painter, William Blake and his portrait overlooked the room from above the fireplace.
The first book I came upon was “Songs of Innocence & Experience. The original book was first published in 1789 and again upon completion in 1794. Yet in 2008, it sits in a 3D Virtual World for a new generations to experience, using the wonders of technology.
There are a few more doors, I have not yet explored, but I will be back.
After spending a few minutes exploring, I started up to the third and last floor in this three dimensional building. Saving the best for last.
Third Floor
Upon reaching the top of the spiral staircase, there was William Shakespear’s portrait, the man whom this floor is dedicated. Presented as grandly as the other books, in this library, these books had been created to recreate the look and sound of hold parchment. The sound of the turning pages was changed in this room, to create that old, delicate, fragile sound of page turning.
Some of the titles here are, A Midsommer Night’s Dreame, The Tragedie of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark; The Tragedie of King Lear; The Tragedie of Othello the Moore of Venice, among others.
Near the entrance of this room, is another audio book, Romeo & Juliet which is available for listing while in the library.
As I prepared to leave the library, I had one more stop near the main entrance. I placed a complimentary set of audio books, War & Peace volumes I, II & III, in my inventory to listen to while I continued to travel and explore new educational locations.*
The library Grounds
The grounds have surprises too. There is a giant old elm tree, where you can site and enjoy the sounds of water and the beauty, while playing a game of Jahjong, at a table for two.
There is also a Ancient Section of the Library, containing the Works of Greek Philosophers, Illiad and Odyssey. This is located behind The Library of Second Life Literary Foundation.
I have visited this location, five separate times, and each I have discover new rooms or something I had not noticed on previous visits. This post is provide only a example of this destination. To thoroughly enjoy its many wonders, you will have to transport to this location and explore yourself.
Would love to hear how you liked the experience and any others you have discovered, that are of a education nature.

Innoventions is currently working on a research & development project, in Second Life, where we are testing educational applications. Through the use of my social network (thanks to Association of Virtual Worlds), I met Heidi Hansen, aka Heidi Ballinger, the founder of Power Match, in Denmark.
In addition to her responsibilities at Power Match, Heidi is also the Project manager at the University of Roskilde (DK), where is working on a four year project covering Virtual Worlds.
I had the great honor and pleasure, of spending time with Heidi in Second Life. She took me on a virtual tour of the Power Match offices, as well as some of her current projects in development. The experience was enlightening, on many levels. I left the experience with many ideas to our development project.
The experience left me wanting more, about Power Match, Heidi and Second Life. I visited the site for Power Match and visited Heidi’s blog. As I was reading through the many posts, I came across a very interesting one, titled “Should I adopt my Second Life name to real life?”
This question seemed easily answered, in my mind, but then I went to the New World Notes blog. Heidi’s question stirred up a lot of interest from readers. The quantity of comments intrigued me, as apparently many people had things to say, so I continued to read. I wondered why Heidi would consider, giving up her real life identity, for that of her avatars.
As I read, I learned that in Denmark, more people know “Heidi Ballinger” from TV and media, than “Heidi Hansen” the real life women. The metaverse has caused a reversal in her branding, by not having the availability to use her real life name, in Second life.
Now I could see her point, strangely enough. I read the blog of Chris Brogan for tips and advice on social networking. Why, because he is a “giver” and a real being, not to mention great advice. As recent a post in June 2008, he says you may want to “transfer your real world reputation into the online world”. I believe that to be Great advice. I imagine he as well as other social media bloggers would find Heidi’s situation an interesting twist.
It is apparent that Heidi is not the only professional with this issue. Linden Labs, developers of Second Life, have a beta program. This program allows for the submission of a Custom Vanity Names, now giving the option to use your life name. At present, there is a $50.00 annual fee, if your submission is approved, but people like me find it worth the additional cost to maintain a common thread between my networks. I do find it amusing, that I must “Pay” to use my own name, but to me worth it.
What would you do under these circumstances? Would you pay the additional fee for a custom vanity name? If you already had a established and well known SL name, would you change your real life name? Do you enjoy having an alter ego? Look forward to hearing others thoughts as I see this as an interesting topic, on the new frontier.
