Twitter? What is a Twitter?

In April, I began to research the changes in Social Networking, and kept seeing references to Twitter. What is Twitter?  A micro-blog, posts up to 140 characters.

First thought was, what could I possibly say in 140 characters? Why would I want another social membership? Do I have time to fit one more network into my day? I had a lot of questions and soon founding myself needing to know more?

I went to my LinkedIn network and posted a

Immediately began getting responses. I was told there were lots of interesting people talking on Twitter, interesting contacts that are not easily found on RSS or email (ok, that surprised me), it’s multiplatform communication tool, and then there was Tweetscan. One person stated that Twitter made them feel that they were more connected then I was following blogs.

The best advice I got was from Mike Kavis, “Try it out! You can follow me, my handle is Madgreek65”. Honestly, I did take a second look at the name MadGreek, and wondered how “mad” was he? Then he gave me a few more names, to help me follow some interesting people.

Had names to follow and ready to go. At first I just watched, but quickly learned everyone had their own style, humor, wit and things to share and say. Within an hour, I was chiming in on other comments. I was then getting the inside scoop on current information, links to blogs, YouTube videos, peoples favorite foods, family events….it was like I had a extended office. I instantly had a mix of jokes, great business links, lunch ideas, movie reviews, links to great blog posts, new software and my list continues.

I then discovered a Twitter Language with Twitterverse, Twitterish, Tweets and Tweet Map. Then a link that really brings Twitter to light, TwittEarth. You can see “Live Twitts all over the world”. Twitter is a unique global communication exchange and it was not like any other social network available.

It is funny, I thought after a month, I could sum up Twitter and its uses, but I can’t. Everyday something new happens that makes this an effective daily tool.

More to come, in Twitter – Two Months &Counting, but in the meantime come along and try it yourself, follow me if you like. My creative handle is: tawnypress : )

I agree, Twitter has the ability to morph into a thousand different useful tools. Or, it can be a sink hole of wasted keystrokes. I’m an optimist at heart, so I see the promise. Now the tech guys behind it need to get on the ball and get it to scale for the growth.

Glad to be following you on Twitter!

I’m glad you’ve discovered Twitter and that you’ve become so engaged with it, Tawny. It’s been nice getting to know you that way. I agree that the great utility of it is that you can have different *kinds* of conversations than you would otherwise. Cheers!

I agree with you Baldeagle, these guys had a great idea, now they need to devise a plan to stabilize the system and prepare for further growth.

As for the Hoover’s staff, @twalk, @hoovers and @zackgonzales (who cracks me up daily), I can’t say enough for the support and eye opening experience you have helped me experience. Not only did I learn about Twitter, I was awakened by excellent customer service from Hoover’s and its staff with my account.
